 WORKSHOP: Advanced Linocut Printmaking

DATES: Saturday-Sunday, 18-19 November 2017
TIMES: 10:00am - 2:00pm each day
COST: $255 per day + $35 material cost

This workshop is for people who wish to extend their exploration of relief block printing techniques.
Participants should have either completed an introductory printmaking course at either ArtWorld Studio Gallery or an institute of higher learning. You will need a clear idea of what you want to achieve, as participants will be encouraged to explore their own direction with the medium.

Participants are expected to provide the following:
  • Fine-tipped permanent waterproof black marking pen
  • HB pencil and ballpoint pen
  • One or two blocks of silkcut lino
  • A utility knife or Stanley knife
  • Lino or wood cutting tools
  • An image, or images, prepared for transferring onto a block (images should not be bigger than the block, usually 150 x 150mm)
  • Old clothes and/or an apron
  • 2 sheets of good quality white printing paper (e.g. Canson Edition 250gsm 560x760mm, Velin BFK Rives Paper 280gsm 56x76cm, Fabriano or Magnani).
All other materials will be supplied.
Required tools will be available to purchase on the day from the ArtWorld Studio Gallery Shop.

In compliance with Workshop Health & Safety regulations, all participants must wear closed-in shoes. Lunch is not provided, though tea and coffee will be available.

Students will learn about the following:
  • Outline of studio use and expectations
  • Works that can be produced using belief block printing
  • Techniques to create belief block printing works
  • Demonstration of plate transfer techniques
  • Revision of correctly 'setting the press'
  • Blankless printing.
The tutor and participants will work together in consultation on each individual's project.

If you are interested in experimenting with different transfer techniques, please bring:
  • Several recent professional photocopies of images (note that computer-done printer copies will not transfer).
If you are interested in doing a reduction print or multi-colour print, please bring:
  • A colour sketch of your image for your tutor to see.
If you are interested in trying a multi-block print, please bring:
  • 2 sheets of A3 acetate, for the tutor to teach a tranfer technique
    • Image should not exceed 150 sq mm.
