HISTORY
Astrid always had a plan to one day own a studio to create her artwork in. She didn’t realise at the time that she would be starting her own Studio Gallery!

Astrid’s journey started at a very young age. As a child, she would create using just about anything she could lay her hands on. She was just two years old when her family decided to make a new life in Australia. Growing up was hard for this immigrant family after the cruelty of the war. Astrid’s parents had witnessed the pain suffered during the war first-hand, and she was told the horrors of concentration in Japanese camps from her parents. Her father worked on the Burma Rail, and her mother was kept in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.
Life at home was not good for Astrid, so she left at the age of 16 to start a new life filled with adventure. She started a nursing career, and during this time began to take piano lessons. Without a piano, she was helped by a lovely lady called Rebecca, who let Astrid use her piano to practise daily. This was the beginning of an enjoyable journey for Astrid; starting something she always wanted to achieve. She completed her studies in piano and the theory of music, and started to teach students from home. During this time, while raising a family with her husband, Astrid pursued her art creating along with her piano playing. |
Art is the very essence of peace and contentment for Astrid. There is nothing she likes better than creating artworks using different genres and mediums. Once her children grew up, and started their own careers and dreams, she went to study Art at TAFE. Astrid obtained a Diploma in Visual Art, and continued on to the Queensland College of Art to complete a Bachelor of Fine Art.
Astrid saw the family swimming pool was due for a facelift, realising the only one swimming in this pool was the occasional duck. She was creating art in her 6 x 6-metre old garage, and as her artworks became bigger, she needed to walk out to the very front of the yard to gain perspective. It was time to expand her studio. Astrid made a plan to fill in the family pool, and build a 13 x 12-metre extension onto her existing studio. This enabled her to incorporate a Studio Gallery at the same time. Such a project required money, so Astrid completed a Graduate Diploma of Education, and secured a teaching job at Mt Maria College, Petrie, where she teaches Art to secondary students.
Thus, ArtWorld Studio Gallery was created as an avenue to display visual artworks. Emerging students are given priority to show their artwork within the Gallery, all the while seeing the creating process happen in the studio where Astrid works on her exhibition during her spare time. “Never give up on your dreams,” is a quote from Astrid. She has never been more content with her life than now. Astrid has her grandchildren hooked on the creating world, with her eldest granddaughter Lucy really enjoying the art space with Astrid for creative pleasure.
We would like to invite you to join us for the first of our many exciting new exhibitions: The Lure of Botanical Dreaming, a collective exhibition of botanical exploration; a series of pleasing conjunctions between plants and their images.
