 WORKSHOP: Introduction to Linocut Printmaking (with Wayne Singleton)

DATES: Saturday-Sunday 11-12 March 2017
TIMES: 10:00am - 2:00pm each day
COST: $225 + $25 material cost

This workshop is for people who wish to begin their exploration of relief block printing. Participants will be taught:
  • To explore different mark-making techniques
  • To use the studio and tools safely and respectfully
  • To prepare paper for printing
  • To ink a block
  • Basic registration of multi-coloured prints
  • To set the various presses correctly and the responsible use of them when printing.
Participants are expected to provide the following, or to purchase materials on the day from the ArtWorld Studio Gallery Shop:
  • Old protective shirt or apron for printing
  • 2 x 150 square blocks of silkcut
  • 2 good sheets of white printmaking paper (~56 x 76 cm, 200 gsm, such as Arches, Fabriano, or Magnani)
  • Set of cheap lino cutting tools
  • Notebook or A3-size visual diary (for taking notes, sketching, and ideal for taking home)
  • HB pencil and biro
  • Lunch and snacks for both days
  • OPTIONAL: Black and coloured tubes of ink if you wish to have them for future use
  • OPTIONAL: Disposable gloves if participants have skin sensitivity to ink or cleaning products
All other materials will be supplied.

In compliance with Workshop Health & Safety regulations, all participants must wear closed-in shoes. Lunch is not provided, though tea and coffee will be available.

The Introduction to Lincout Printmaking Workshop Plan is as follows:

Day 1:
Morning:
  • Introduction and outline of Studio use and expectations
  • Basic demonstration/familiarisation with the safe use of tools, equipment, and how to cut lino to size
  • Experimental mark-making on small pieces of lino, running those through the press to broaden understanding of the possibilities offered by the medium, to produce a small reduction print
  • Explanation of cutting techniques used, demonstration of correct technique for tearing paper
Afternoon:
  • Artist talk session, and examples of tutor's work
  • Discussion about tools, inks and paper, and where to buy them
  • Discussion of techniques for transferring images onto a block (to be expanded upon and demonstrated in the Advanced workshop)
  • Either continuing experimental mark-making and waste blocking, or beginning drawing an image for cutting a printing a black-and-white print on Day 2

Day 2:
Morning:
  • Questions from Day 1?
  • Preparing an image on block for cutting a black-and-white print (if not begun on Day 1)
  • Cutting block/s
  • Preparing printing paper and registration sheet
Afternoon:
  • Printing
  • Discussing hand-colouring prints
  • Cleaning up the Studio
  • 'Show and tell' and feedback session
