Title: A better life.
Size: 46cm x 46 cm
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Hameed, grew up in Quetta, Pakistan. His people, the “Hazara” people were given little access to education and employment. Haraza people were the targets often getting killed while walking to school or work. The Government was continually complicit in the killings and no one was ever caught. His family struggled and often sat without food at the table. It was often to dangerous for his father to go out and find work.
His father took a risk in trying to get to Australia. He borrowed all he that could from the community and left his wife and three children to try and find a better life. When he arrived in Indonesia he phoned to farewell his family before he caught a boat to Australia. It was the last time his family ever heard his voice. He still remains missing.
The UN sponsored the rest of the family to come to Australia in 2013. They couldn’t speak any English, but they finally had a chance to actually live. Hameed has finished high school and is now studying at university. They still eat with one empty chair at the table, which is his father’s chair.
