Title: Learning Joy
Size: 27cm x 40cm
Medium: Watercolour on Canson Paper
The youngest daughter in a family of 17 children from Nigeria, Joy was looked down on as “less” because of her gender as well as being the youngest in the family. She was extremely sick as a young child, so her parents thought it wasn’t important to teach her the basic things that a child could learn. Like recognise numbers or to write your name. “you are dumb” You are not smart”. Her father thought that all she should do in life was to sell at the markets.
Joy fought hard to get her education. With the help of her older brothers and other friends Joy went to high school. She ran away at one stage and worked as a nannie for her brother in return for him paying her education fees. She graduated and completed university in Nigeria. Even still all her life it has been a battle to push aside the words spoken over her that she is “dull” and “not worth it”. Yet now Joy continues to fight for her future. When she moved to Australia with her husband, she became a teacher’s aide. Now she is studying her Bachelor of early childhood education.
