In an ever-expanding world of digital format, Perspectivity is Brisbane based artist Tamara Gerlic’s journey of rediscovery of the natural and built world around us.
The series is a painterly exploration of landscapes and cityscapes that convey notions of peace through place, space and contemplative transcendence. Each painting is a symbolic meditation of fragmented memories that capture the innocence of childhood wonder, celebrations, as well as the deep self-awareness and emotional reflection that being within our favourite daydream evokes. Drawing on Expressionistic influences, Perspectivity is a collection of transportive realities. Tamara says: My work features monochrome blues, sometimes with hints of red and yellow, that lend to the daydream scene with strands of reality. These colours create a thread between each of the artworks and inspired by Beijing artist Zhang Xiaogang. Others were inspired by the light I see in the sky, drawn from the amazing palette of Ben Quilty. I almost never use a paintbrush and usually colours are often mixed directly on the canvas. There is something nostalgic and organic about fingers dipping into paints and colours dripping from straight-edged tools. This physical experience lets my mind and body intermingle with the most wonderful memories of my childhood. My canvases are usually built up with mixed media materials – modelling compound, paper, plaster, impasto and string - adding depth to the visual and tactile experience. I invite you to touch the canvases and play as well. I am passionate about the positivity and wonder of emotions in my visual work. I don't expect it to be sombrely critiqued, but joyously interacted with. When you look at them, I hope you see in these paintings reminders from your own daydreams.” |
